{"id":11589,"date":"2025-10-20T10:34:14","date_gmt":"2025-10-20T07:04:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/iata.org.ir\/?p=11589"},"modified":"2025-10-20T10:34:14","modified_gmt":"2025-10-20T07:04:14","slug":"adoption-of-five-national-tobacco-prevention-packages-a-new-era-in-health-oriented-policy-making-in-iran","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iata.org.ir\/en\/news-en\/adoption-of-five-national-tobacco-prevention-packages-a-new-era-in-health-oriented-policy-making-in-iran\/","title":{"rendered":"Adoption of Five National Tobacco Prevention Packages: A New Era in Health-Oriented Policy Making in Iran"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"349\" data-end=\"625\">The approval of five national tobacco prevention packages \u2014 covering <strong data-start=\"418\" data-end=\"513\">schools, universities, multimedia productions, cyberspace, and public places and workplaces<\/strong> \u2014 marks a milestone in Iran\u2019s cultural health policies and represents new hope for a tobacco-free generation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"627\" data-end=\"1153\">Following two years of intensive efforts by the <strong data-start=\"675\" data-end=\"711\">Iranian Anti-Tobacco Association<\/strong> and close collaboration among scientific, cultural, and executive bodies, particularly the <strong data-start=\"803\" data-end=\"868\">Secretariat of the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution<\/strong> and the <strong data-start=\"877\" data-end=\"909\">Council\u2019s Think Tank members<\/strong>, these comprehensive prevention packages were finalized and ratified during the <strong data-start=\"990\" data-end=\"1057\">119th session of the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution<\/strong>, chaired by <strong data-start=\"1070\" data-end=\"1101\">President Masoud Pezeshkian<\/strong>, on <strong data-start=\"1106\" data-end=\"1150\">Tuesday, October 14, 2025 (22 Mehr 1404)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1155\" data-end=\"1385\">According to <strong data-start=\"1168\" data-end=\"1197\">Dr. Mohammad Reza Masjedi<\/strong>, Secretary-General of the Iranian Anti-Tobacco Association, the ratification of these five national packages marks <strong data-start=\"1313\" data-end=\"1382\">the beginning of a new era in Iran\u2019s health-oriented policymaking<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1387\" data-end=\"1613\">Dr. Masjedi emphasized that, after years of effort to move the issue of tobacco control from the margins to the center of national cultural decision-making, this achievement represents a <strong data-start=\"1574\" data-end=\"1599\">historic step forward<\/strong>. He stated:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1387\" data-end=\"1613\">\u201cThe approval of these five policy packages not only provides an operational framework for tobacco control but also signifies a turning point toward sustainable health and a tobacco-free society in Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1387\" data-end=\"1613\">\u201cChanging the culture of consumption is the key to controlling it,\u201d Dr. Masjedi noted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1387\" data-end=\"1613\">Highlighting the importance of the decision, he said:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1387\" data-end=\"1613\">\u201cThis is the first time that tobacco control has been elevated to a <strong data-start=\"2227\" data-end=\"2270\">national, social, and cultural priority<\/strong> with <strong data-start=\"2276\" data-end=\"2300\">legal enforceability<\/strong>. The resolution was approved at the highest level of cultural policymaking in Iran, with the participation of the heads of all three branches of government. This means that all executive agencies are now legally obligated to implement its provisions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1387\" data-end=\"1613\">Dr. Masjedi pointed to the <strong data-start=\"2583\" data-end=\"2614\">unprecedented collaboration<\/strong> among ministries and institutions, from the <strong data-start=\"2659\" data-end=\"2703\">Ministry of Health and Medical Education<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"2708\" data-end=\"2733\">Ministry of Education<\/strong> to the <strong data-start=\"2741\" data-end=\"2825\">National Broadcasting Organization, religious seminaries, universities, and NGOs<\/strong>, emphasizing that:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1387\" data-end=\"1613\">\u201cThis synergy demonstrates that combating tobacco use is no longer solely the government\u2019s responsibility, but a <strong data-start=\"2962\" data-end=\"2999\">collective movement of the nation<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1387\" data-end=\"1613\">He expressed appreciation for the continuous efforts of the <strong data-start=\"3065\" data-end=\"3087\">Ministry of Health<\/strong>, acknowledging its crucial role at the forefront of public health protection.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1387\" data-end=\"1613\">\u201cWith the activation of the National Tobacco Control Headquarters and coordinated implementation of the new resolutions, we can expect significant progress in reducing tobacco consumption nationwide,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1387\" data-end=\"1613\">Dr. Masjedi also addressed the serious <strong data-start=\"3422\" data-end=\"3473\">health and economic consequences of tobacco use<\/strong>, noting that:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1387\" data-end=\"1613\">\u201cOver 60,000 deaths annually in Iran are attributed directly or indirectly to tobacco use, with an estimated economic burden exceeding 40 trillion tomans each year. Yet, the greater threat lies in the <strong data-start=\"3693\" data-end=\"3734\">cultural normalization of tobacco use<\/strong>, especially among youth. The new national policy has been specifically designed to counter this normalization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1387\" data-end=\"1613\">He added that the adopted strategies provide a <strong data-start=\"3897\" data-end=\"3967\">roadmap for rebuilding societal beliefs about health and lifestyle<\/strong>, stressing that success depends on public engagement:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1387\" data-end=\"1613\">\u201cFamilies, teachers, business owners, and producers all play decisive roles. Once we collectively recognize that tobacco is an enemy of our children\u2019s health, the path toward cessation, prevention, and tobacco-free environments will become achievable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1387\" data-end=\"1613\">As a university professor and health advocate, Dr. Masjedi emphasized the Association\u2019s key goal:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1387\" data-end=\"1613\">\u201cTo engage the public through education, media, digital platforms, and cultural dialogue. This new policy framework establishes the <strong data-start=\"4516\" data-end=\"4548\">legal and ethical foundation<\/strong> for such engagement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1387\" data-end=\"1613\">He concluded:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1387\" data-end=\"1613\">\u201cToday, we are witnessing the birth of a <strong data-start=\"4633\" data-end=\"4652\">national policy<\/strong> that rekindles hope for a healthier future. Our goal by <strong data-start=\"4709\" data-end=\"4748\">2035 (1414 in the Iranian calendar)<\/strong> is to achieve a marked reduction in tobacco consumption, reshape public attitudes, and nurture a healthier generation. Achieving this vision requires <strong data-start=\"4899\" data-end=\"4920\">collective action<\/strong> \u2014 from the government, parliament, judiciary, cultural institutions, media, and most importantly, the people.
