
A training workshop on cigarette use prevention using the “Training of Trainers” approach was organized by the Counseling and Lifestyle Center of Amirkabir University of Technology, in collaboration with the Cultural and Student Affairs Department, the Iranian Anti-Tobacco Association, and the Psychological Health Peer Support Club.
According to the Public Relations Office of the Association, the workshop took place on Tuesday, 8 December 2025, at the university’s Counseling and Lifestyle Center. The program was attended by dormitory managers, health liaisons, and members of the Psychological Health Peer Support Club. The session was conducted by Dr. Sharif Torkamanzhad, Scientific Advisor of the Iranian Anti-Tobacco Association.
During the workshop, Dr. Torkamanzhad provided an overview of tobacco consumption prevalence and discussed its economic, individual, familial, and social consequences both in Iran and globally. He also introduced effective global strategies for tobacco control. Key topics included assessing the current situation, protecting individuals from secondhand and thirdhand smoke, posting warning signs, enforcing regulations, and creating smoke-free and healthy environments.
Practical steps for reducing and controlling cigarette use in university dormitories were also presented, including:

Developing a “Tobacco-Free University” policy and obtaining approval from senior management;

Implementing widespread awareness campaigns;

Providing brief counseling sessions through dormitory supervisors;

Establishing cessation services;

Designing alternative activities for students;

Developing written regulations to enforce the prohibition of tobacco use within campus environments.
The workshop actively engaged students, who shared their experiences, asked questions, and discussed challenges in reducing tobacco use. The session concluded with an emphasis on follow-up and practical implementation of the proposed measures in collaboration with university administrators and dormitory managers.
