A joint meeting between Zahra Sadr, Head of the Women’s Unit at the Iranian Anti-Tobacco Association (IATA), and officials from the Center for the Promotion of Participation and Social Responsibility in District 1 of Tehran Municipality emphasized the importance of strengthening collaboration in tobacco prevention and control, raising public awareness, managing cigarette butt and filter waste, and protecting the urban environment.
According to the Public Relations Office of IATA, the meeting was held on Tuesday, 13 October 2026 (21 Mehr 1405), between Engineer Bakhtiari, Director of the Center for the Promotion of Participation and Social Responsibility in District 1 of Tehran Municipality, and Zahra Sadr. The meeting aimed to build synergies between the two organizations and develop joint initiatives in public health, social harm prevention, and urban environmental protection.
Strengthening Civil Society Participation in Public Health
Discussing the objectives of development centers and the role of the District 1 Center as a specialized health hub, participants emphasized the importance of mobilizing the capacities of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and encouraging citizen participation to improve community health, particularly among young people and vulnerable populations.
One of the key areas of potential cooperation was the organization of educational and awareness-raising workshops on tobacco prevention and control. Particular attention was given to communicating the adverse effects of tobacco use on individual health, family well-being, and women’s health.
Addressing Cigarette Butt Waste and Urban Environmental Pollution
The meeting also explored the potential implementation of a pilot initiative for managing cigarette butt and filter waste across District 1, with active citizen participation.
The proposed initiative aims to increase public awareness of the environmental consequences of tobacco-related waste and encourage community engagement in reducing urban pollution. Cigarette filters are a significant environmental concern because discarded filters contain persistent materials and can release toxic substances into the surrounding environment.
Developing Joint Programs for Tobacco Prevention and Control
Participants highlighted the importance of engaging NGOs and translating shared objectives into practical programs for tobacco prevention and control.
It was agreed that the Iranian Anti-Tobacco Association would develop a proposed action plan aligned with its mission and objectives. Following review and coordination with Tehran Municipality’s District 1 administration, the plan could provide a framework for implementing joint activities.
Public Awareness Campaigns Through Urban Communication Channels
Building on previous discussions with Dr. Hamidreza Eshraghi, Deputy Director for Welfare and Social Participation at Tehran Municipality’s Organization for Welfare, Services and Social Participation, the meeting also addressed the production and installation of public information banners and billboards promoting tobacco prevention and raising awareness of the harmful consequences of tobacco use.
Under the agreement, IATA will be responsible for developing the educational content for these public awareness messages. The installation and implementation of the campaign will be pursued in coordination with the relevant municipal authorities.
Moving Toward an Integrated Approach to Public and Environmental Health
At the conclusion of the meeting, participants emphasized the need to develop a comprehensive joint plan addressing health promotion, the prevention of risk-taking behaviors, and urban environmental protection. Further meetings will be held to finalize the details and advance the proposed initiatives toward implementation.
This collaboration has the potential to strengthen community participation, improve public understanding of the health and environmental consequences of tobacco use, and support coordinated local action toward healthier communities and a cleaner urban environment.
